The project is planned to enhance the options for better agriculture and livelihood of rural people. National Agriculture Innovation Project was designed to provide modern technology and modern methods of farming to the people and enhance their knowledge through study tours and trainings.

----LIVELIHOOD SECURITY OF RURAL POOR (GKVK / NIAP) --
Background

The project is planned to enhance the options for better agriculture and livelihood of rural people. Chitradurga naturally falls under the area that is prone to recurring drought. Hosadurga, Challakere and Hiriyur were selected under this project. 500 families from each Taluk were selected as target beneficiaries. The target includes mostly poor people, day wage labourers, landless people and landholders.

The target group was left behind in education and linkage to the line departments of the government. Their lands did not have check dams, farm ponds and any other facilities that would enhance the water table and provide better water source for agriculture.

National Agriculture Innovation Project was designed to provide modern technology and modern methods of farming to the people and enhance their knowledge through study tours and trainings. This was intended as an exemplary project which could be imitated by the other farmers and villages later.

The project aimed at providing the target group with these facilities
* Seed treatment * Trainings * Exposures * Introduction of new breeds * Animal husbandry (sheep raring, cows and buffaloes rearing and poultry farming) * Fishery * Fodder development * Income generating activities including ragi cleaning and grinding unit and multi-crop crusher etc.

PROJECT PROFILE




Innovations of the Project

Increasing the profit through integrated farming system which depends on the local resources and managing the natural resources.

Capacity building through economic empowerment with a value addition to millets and groundnuts

Increasing productivity and profit through seed production

Empowering women economically by introducing Income Generating Activities

Improving the animal breed through better care and better artificial insemination

Introducing the high yielding poultry which adapts to the local climate

Finding alternate programmes to balance the loss due to natural imbalances like drought etc.


IMPLEMENTATION


		Soil and water conservation:

		Existing bunds in the lands of 205 farmers are strengthened, one check dam is repaired, and 11 Farm Ponds are constructed.

		Vermicompost units were given to 25 farmers and organic compost pits were put up for 24 farmers.

		Community Based Organisations and Livelihood Support

		29 CBOs are formed and 73,23,000 rupees of loan is given to the groups for livelihood support.


		The following activities are taken up by the beneficiaries for livelihood support.

		* Multi crop Crushing * Ragi Processing * Sheep rearing



		Exposures and Visits

		In the year 2009, approximately 70 farmers were taken to Krishi Vijnana Kendra, Babbur for an exposure. The farmers witnessed animal husbandry, vermicompost, seed treatment, fodder development, soil and water conservation.

		The farmers were taken to Bangalore for Krishi Mela in Agricultural University of Bangalore, GKVK. 60 farmers each were taken twice in the year 2009 and 2010.

		Twenty women were taken for an exposure to Hebbal, Bangalore. Ornamental fishery training was imparted to them.

		We had taken five farmers of Hosadurga cluster on an exposure visit to B.G.Kere. The farmers were trained with the following: Zero cultivation, dairy farming, sericulture, sheep and goat rearing with stall-feeding.
