"PRATHYASHA" COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTRE – CHINCHOLI

PRATHYASHA – A Centre of Hope

Prathyasha is the initiative of Franciscan Missionaries of Mary at Chincholi of Gulbarga District, which was started in the year 2006. In response to the needs of the people and at the request of Gulbarga Diocese in order to share the vision of Christ to promote and provide value based and dignified life to all, especially to the least fortunate (Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes, poor and marginalised) in this bordered, neglected and backward region of Karnataka State.

VISION

PRATHYASHA is helping Women, Youth and Children into a self confident and courageous people creating a better Self–Image to face the challenges of life promoting community based organisations, to protect and promote children's education and to empower women socially, economically and politically, to form them towards an integral, enhanced and peaceful life situation and a harmonious living.

STRATEGIES

* Interacting with the community and mobilising them
* Participation in the socio-religious functions/festive celebrations in order to identify with the people
* Forming Community Based Organisations and training them with exposures and workshops to create constant awareness and motivation for self-development.
* Internal lending and bank linkages and linkage to other financial institutions.
* Networking with NGOs and government departments
* Celebration of Women’s Day, Girl Child’s Day, Environmental Day along with SHG, community and government departments.

* Enhancing the leadership qualities of the youth group members to act as pressure groups and volunteers for the community development
* Striving towards the integrated development of rural children who are neglected, non-school going, and school dropouts by identifying their skills and potentials and fostering healthy competitions among them.

ACTIVITIES

* Mobilising and creating a positive rapport with the community to gain their wilful acceptance and co-operation
* Social mobilisation, awareness and empowerment to form development oriented women Self Help Groups in 50 villages with the collaboration of Seva Sangam so that they become the agents of transformation who are socially, politically and economically empowered. To achieve this we are imparting need based / skill based trainings.
* Youth groups/Joint Liability Groups are formed in order to instruct them on value education, career guidance, sex and marriage and income generating activities.
* To protect and preserve nature through creating eco-awareness in all the CBOs and children’s groups.

OUR LADY'S NATIVITY, SHIRVA UDUPI DISTRICT

Our Lady’s Nativity, Shirva started on 2nd of February 1962. The centre was started with a purpose to help in the education of children, and a work centre for unemployed and uneducated women of Shirva and its surrounding villages.

The management and the public of Shirva opened a Marian English school in Shirva in March 1962 and our three sisters were teaching in the school. The Sisters also had a small hostel for poor girls who wanted to continue their Higher Secondary, High School, and college education.

The work centre was started where 50 uneducated and unemployed rural women were trained in stitching, embroidery, cutting and tailoring. The produce was sold in the open market and wages were paid. Along with this, they also started a hostel for the rural girls to support their higher education.

Present Situation:

* Sisters are teaching in the High School and Primary Schools at Shirva, serving the poor children who come to these Kannada Medium Schools.

* The SHGs which ran for nearly 50 years, were closed in the year 2010, and in that place, “Don Bosco Play

School" is started for little children.

We are more involved in the pastoral work (religious duties) of the Parish. Through our house-visits, we come to know the life and struggles of people, and help them in various ways. We guide them to get social, educational, medical and other assistance. We also try to bring reconciliation among families.

NAVAJEEVAN, HIRGAN

Navajeevan in Hirgan was started on 3rd of June 2007 in a rented house near Durga High School. As part of their social ministry, they teach in the parish school. In the year 2011 a girls hostel ‘Navajeevan’ was started. At present, there are 11 girls in the hostel. In the month of June, 2012 a Playschool ‘Navajeevan’ was also started.
