The Karnataka community based tank management project is being implemented with the financial support from the World Bank. The project was initiated in 2002. In the first phase of the project 2005 tank systems spread across 34 taluks of 9 districts were taken up. |

Background | ||
Tanks (kere) have been the symbol of water harvesting tradition in Karnataka since time immemorial. Tank systems have contributed to the sustainability of ecology, environment and rural livelihood since centuries. Realising the pivotal role played by the tank system in supporting rural livelihood and ecology the government of Karnataka gave priority for the restoration of traditional tank systems through community based approach. |

Franciscan Sisters of Mary entered the project in its second phase where the rejuvenation of 694 tanks in karnataka was taken up by the government. |

7. Loans are given to the people for income generating activity through the tank management committee. The principal amount and interest of the IGA loans are paid back to the maintenance fund of the committee which in turn is used for tank rejuvenation. | ||
