| Problem |
| Both the SHGs Ashraya and Vanashree were started two and half years ago. The Government wanted to start a Hydro Electric power-production unit in Muduba village by constructing a dam. If a dam were to be constructed, then all the villagers would be displaced which means they had to vacate their land. None of the villagers were ready to vacate their land as they are emotionally to their land and surroundings. At this point of time all the villagers were frustrated and they did not group strength. In the month of November 2003 both the SHGs had a joint meeting and discussed their course of action. They decided that with the cooperation of all the SHGs in the Taluk and the general public, they would organise a massive rally to protest against the gross injustice. They decided the day for the rally was 12th December 2003. This issue was propagated throughout the District through various means, like, printing of handbills, public announcement, newspaper ads, etc. |

| Action Taken |
| On the said date hundreds of people gathered at a public place and after public addresses by local leaders and Social workers, they took out a rally to Gram Panchayat office and sat on Dharna. After sometime the Tahsildar came and met the agitating crowd and convinced them that he would convey the message to the District Commissioner (D.C.) and urged them to disperse. But the SHG representatives refused to budge without meeting the D.C. and submitting the memorandum to him in person. |
| Result: The D.C. immediately contacted the concerned and after long deliberation, the ongoing work was stopped. |
| Impact: Women have self–confidence to fight against the problems affecting
them. Unity & Group bond is increased. Women now
know “Unity is Strength”. In many of the villages seeing the
developmental work the villagers show interest to form SHGs. |
